Shop.com tries to diagnose Web site problems before customer frustration
sets in
Online retailer works to avoid Web site downtime during the busy holiday
shopping season.
December 14, 2006
With the holiday shopping season in full swing, Shop.com wants its Web
site running as smoothly and quickly as possible. An hour of slow
service could cost the Monterey, Calif., company hundreds of thousands
of dollars, company officials say. The system, developed by
ProactiveNet, collects data to learn what the normal behavior of the
company's IT infrastructure is at any given time of the day or week.
This allows it to discover when CPU usage is abnormally high or low.

ProactiveNet enhances net, app management software
Company adds user monitoring, business service console and SLA
management features.
May 29, 2006
The software, ProactiveNet 7.0, includes a Business Services Management
console that lets customers view the relationships among applications,
such network components as routers, servers and databases, and user
machines, the company says. With this view, customers can determine more
quickly the cause of a problem and minimize the effect on users.

Primer: Business Services Management
Business Services Management applications pinpoint systems glitches and figure out how to fix them.
April 6, 2005
What is it? Software that can correlate the performance and availability of your company's information systems with its business goals. Such Business Services Management products can immediately notify business managers or technical staff when an application starts slowing down or experiencing other problems. The software then pinpoints what's causing the glitch and how to fix it.

E-Business News: Watching Over Walmart.com ProactiveNet measures and analyzes the performance of Walmart.com's website infrastructure; benchmarking the normal so as to be more responsive to exceptions
February 11, 2004
ProactiveNet adds an analytical layer and dashboard on top of systems management solutions (like those of BMC and CA) with a view to "see the real-time performance metrics of what's going on in the [website] infrastructure. As such, the ProactiveNet differentiator is that the product is more lightweight and offers substantial functionality: for example, monitoring service degradation by stages, allowing companies to step in and take action before an actual failure.

Feature: The Survivor's Guide to 2004: Network and Systems Management
Dynamic thresholds: When it comes to selecting the right thresholds to trigger alerts, one size does not fit all networks. Recognizing that, better performance-management products seek to set thresholds that represent the norm for each particular network. This is key because static thresholds mean a flood of false warnings, and like the cries of the boy who cried wolf, critical notifications then cease to be effective operational diagnostic triggers.
ProactiveNet creates such dynamic thresholds by watching existing traffic and setting high and low values based on differences seen over a range of times. For example, traffic on a particular interface or for a specific service might seem unusually high, but is it high every month on the day after accounting closes the books? This is the kind of sensitivity that will let you see the threshold in context of what's normal for your network

Automate Your Web Application Performance Monitoring
April 2003
Although it's always been a good idea for system administrators
to keep a handle on application performance, the increasing
interconnectivity of business activity in WebSphere
environments makes top performance imperative. But
if your enterprise is even medium-sized, the number
of components on which an eye must be kept are myriad — and
multiplying.

The End All of Network Performance Management
Performance-management products need to get to the source of network problems
and present data in a way that sheds light on what's actually happening. Network
Computing tested six end-to-end management products and evaluated their root-cause
analysis, data collection and implementation features. One key capability that
separated the winners from the losers in our tests was root-cause analysis. Our
Editor's Choice, ProactiveNet, used this functionality to get to the heart of
our IT problems.
