Next-generation management tools indicate more automation to come
June 07, 2006
ProactiveNet CTO and Co-Founder, Atul Garg, was the original architect
for HP OpenView. Building on his years of experience with HPOV and other
products, his group designed ProactiveNet to be predictive and
proactive. ProactiveNet gathers data by watching end-to-end transactions
as they traverse the infrastructure. Built-in intelligence enables it to
see the transaction from the end-user perspective and to link
transactions to underlying infrastructure. ProactiveNet provides an
"early warning system" by applying sophisticated algorithms to stored
data points to proactively notify of impending problems based on past
behavior. Its rolling baselines help organizations to understand levels
of service being delivered and to formulate service-level agreements
(SLA).

Improving Event Management In Business Service Management
Forrester Research, Inc., September, 2004
Events and alarms are the fundamental elements of IT infrastructure
real-time monitoring. Any status changed or threshold crossed in device
usage generates an event alarm that needs to be reported, analyzed, and
acted upon by IT operations. In a distributed environment with complex
and tightly coupled systems, the sheer volume of alert messages produced
is a true challenge in sorting the wheat from the chaff. Business
service management (BSM), through its service-modeling capabilities,
provides a way to group events by business service or application.
"BSM represents an important step in identifying the potential
sources
of a problem, but its accuracy is still dependent on the ability
of an event
management solution to report actual problems...real-time and
predictive
analyses of system behavior, using dynamic thresholds set
through a
'self-learning' process, promise to be a more effective
approach. When
used in conjunction with BSM, the two techniques can effectively
complement
each other to better identify infrastructure issues."
White Paper: BSM: Improve IT Service Levels with Better Analytics |

"Many of today's IT operations departments are awash in enterprise
management data, but little of it is truly useful information. To better
direct their problem remediation efforts and to more effectively assess
resource demand, IT organizations should increasingly look for tools that
can sift through the management data clutter to pinpoint today's problems
and predict tomorrow's capacity needs."

"Business and IT alignment is not a new concept, but when combined with initiatives like ITIL, now everyone is thinking about BSM. While no single tool is going to cut it for large enterprises, ProactiveNet's business and IT service management solutions should be on the short-list for any large company with ITIL initiatives or a BSM mandate."
"With service level objectives, it comes down to compliance or non-compliance in the eyes of business unit owners. Companies interested in linking the compliance of their service objectives with the behavior of their application infrastructure should consider solutions like ProactiveNet, whose real-time performance analytics directly link SLA compliance with application infrastructure performance. Real-time performance analysis enables IT operations to see which SLAs are trending downward, and fix the problem before compliance is impacted." |

"The application performance management market is in the midst of a generational shift. Whereas traditional management product still focus on events and availability, enterprise organizations should investigate vendors such as ProactiveNet, whose products deliver real-time analysis of performance data. While there is no shortage of current solutions that correlate performance events, the shift is toward solutions that correlate performance data, the key to understanding what is affecting application performance." |
